Help Building a Modular Synth
If you are reading this, you’ve unfortunately come across a snag with your AI Synthesis Modular Synth build. Don’t worry – I’m here to help.
I’m as much a builder as I am a modular maker. As a builder, I understand the frustration when something doesn’t work. I’ll help you troubleshoot your build and get it to the finish line. If you are fed up and just want it to work, I can help with that too (see the bottom). Before you give up though, let’s talk about getting you help via email.
1. I need pictures
If you’ve reached out for help, you’ll get a response from me saying at least two things: 1. Thanks for reaching out, and 2. Please send hi res images of the top and bottom of your boards. The reason for #1 is that I’m happy you came to me before going to a forum. I appreciate you giving me a chance to help you. The reason for #2 is that if you have an issue with your build, it is almost certainly to be a soldering error, as our boards are all wiring-free. I can often fix an issue if I can see a soldering mistake, so the pictures are incredible important to me.
2. The more you tell me, the better
I work off three things when helping you, the images you provide, my knowledge of the circuit, and your description. The more you tell me the better, especially with an advanced circuit. If you tell me “the mixer doesn’t work,” that could be a lot of things. If you tell me “channel 1 of the mixer works, but none of the other channels do,” I can tell you exactly where to look. The more description, the better. I’m not a mind reader and I’m not there with you testing the circuit, so I need to know as much as possible.
3. Let me know where/how you bought it
Letting me know how you got the module helps me help you. Was it a built and tested module you are having issues with? That’s a warranty thing. Was it a PCB/panel? Ok that could be a lot of things. Did you get it as a trade from a guy named Victor and it doesn’t work? I’ll still help you, but you might want to talk to Victor 😉
4. Make sure you are testing correctly
Once I have pictures, I’ll ask you to test continuity on sections for testing. When testing please be sure you’re testing component connections and not pads on the PCBs. PCB pads will always show continuity (unless you completely burn them off) so you need to be sure you are testing the components when checking continuity. I’ll make a video shortly below.
5. If you’re “done” troubeshooting, I can help
Sometimes you are just done troubleshooting. I get that. I have unfinished projects that I’ve started and wished they would just go away. If you are “done” let me know and we’ll work something out. Often times that means sending a circuit back to me, and I’ll send it back to you working and you’ll pay a bit more for the difference between your purchase and the “built and tested” version. Other times that might mean you just need a tested “rear” board of the Looping envelope generator, which is cheaper. We can talk about that.
