I’ve been wanting to make this video/guide for years, but was stymied by my loathing of proper lighting and setting up a proper video rig, so I decided to do it quick and dirty with my phone. Sorry not sorry.

How to Organize DIY Synth Parts

I don’t actually hate parts bins, I just don’t use them. Here are a summary of the points in the video:

  1. Collectible Card Boxes are great for flat parts! They only cost a buck or two, and you can store thousands of parts in a neat and easy to find way.
  2. Bags in Bags in Bags. For non-flat parts, I use bags in bags in bags, for instance: TL072s are in a bag, which are in a bag of all of my Tl ICs, which are in a bigger bag of all of my ICs. Lots of ICs, easy to find, in a small size.
  3. Build documents are important and need to track 3 things: 1) What you have in stock and what you need to order, and from where. 2) What you have soldered. 3) Notes.
  4. I changed my printable build guides. I used to make PDF build guides that were versions of my web build guides, but that seems redundant, and now the printable build guides are concise, usually one page checklists that provide the above info.
